Oviedo is taking part in a pilot project led by SEGITTUR to analyse circularity in the tourism sector and define a collaborative roadmap towards more sustainable models. The initiative involves tourism companies, restaurants and other destination stakeholders committed to continuous improvement and innovation.
The project aims to identify opportunities to optimise the use of resources, encourage cooperation between businesses, and move towards a more efficient and resilient tourism model aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
In this context, the meetings industry has a particularly important role to play. Congresses, conventions and professional events generate economic activity across many sectors, from accommodation and hospitality to transport, retail and specialised services. Incorporating sustainability criteria into their organisation helps maximise this positive impact and contributes to the balanced development of the destination.
Participation in this project complements other initiatives that reinforce Oviedo’s commitment to a responsible tourism model. In early 2026, the city was certified as a Sustainable Tourism
Destination, recognition of the work carried out in areas such as governance, destination management, continuous improvement, and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.
For Oviedo, sustainability is not understood solely from an environmental perspective. It also means strengthening cooperation between businesses and institutions, encouraging local consumption, optimising resource management, and fostering a growth model that creates value for the city, the tourism sector and its visitors.
Participation in this pilot project will make it possible to adopt new tools and methodologies to continue improving the destination’s competitiveness and respond to the growing expectations of organisers and attendees, who increasingly value destinations’ commitment to sustainability and the positive legacy of professional events.
