Oviedo launches a working group to strengthen congress tourism

The creation of the MICE Working Group marks an important step towards strengthening coordination between the public and private sectors, with the aim of making Oviedo more competitive as a destination for congresses, meetings and professional events.

The priorities identified include improving destination promotion, identifying and showcasing new and distinctive venues, developing shared tools for organisers, and promoting event-bidding initiatives targeting the main domestic and international markets.

The MICE Working Group has been created as a permanent forum involving institutions and professionals connected with the meetings industry. Its purpose is to share information, identify opportunities and coordinate initiatives that will help strengthen Oviedo’s position in an increasingly competitive market.

One of its main objectives is to provide congress and event organisers with a more coordinated response by facilitating access to resources, improving cooperation between the destination’s different stakeholders, and developing tools that simplify the planning of professional meetings.

In 2025, the Conference Centre welcomed more than 100,000 attendees and the city hosted over 20 professional congresses, consolidating the MICE segment as one of the driving forces behind Oviedo’s tourism industry and economy.

The launch of this working group forms part of a continuous-improvement strategy designed to strengthen public-private cooperation and create new opportunities for a sector that has a significant economic and knowledge-generating impact. Initiatives already under way include the development of a new website for Oviedo Congresos, the production of a destination MICE guide, and the creation of new digital tools to facilitate event organisation.
